Ship Sheet Metal Group
A ship is made entirely of steel and steel is the most important raw material for shipbuilders. All parts of ships made of steel, from the keel to the outer cladding, are made of ship steels. Ship steel sheets are very close to commercial grade steels in terms of chemical composition. For example, when the chemical components of A grade ship sheet are compared with the chemical components of ST 37 quality sheet, the carbon ratio of A grade ship sheet is around 0.21. In addition, the manganese value is higher in ship sheets than in commercial quality sheets. One of the most important reasons for shipbuilding shipyards to use ship sheet is its durability. Ship construction steels are subjected to surface cleaning and painting process before ship assembly. This process is also called “shot blast painting”. In sheet metal sandblasting painting processes, steel balls are used to ensure surface cleaning and smoothness. After surface cleaning with steel balls, epoxy paint, known as primer paint, is applied.
After shot blast painting processes, the life of the steel material is extended. This means that the oxidation process of the steel slows down, while the strength of the steel remains unchanged. Another method of extending the life of steel is galvanized coating. However, since galvanized coating requires much higher costs compared to sandblasting painting costs, shipbuilders, i.e. shipyards, generally prefer sandblasting painting process.
